2024 Ford Ranger

Overview

Fans of the Ranger mourned when Ford stopped making the small pickup in 2011 and cheered when the popular truck reappeared, as a mid-sized pickup, in 2019. There’s more reason to cheer as the fifth-generation Ranger rolls off US assembly lines. The 2024 Ford Ranger is bigger and better, with lots of style notes from its big brother, the F-150, and tech equipment that leads the field of mid-sized pickups.

Who’s It For?

Tech upgrades notwithstanding, Ford hasn’t forgotten its fan base. The Ranger has long appealed to drivers looking for functionality, a vehicle that fits into their workaholic lives. Ford may have buffed up the Ranger’s style, but not at the expense of practical concerns. Indeed, drivers will find the 2024 Ford Ranger more capable than its predecessors of hauling building supplies, towing trailers, serving as an ad hoc workstation, and handling rugged roads and dicey driving conditions. What’s more, the Ranger driver can have all that practicality without sacrificing comfort.

What’s New for 2024?

Pretty much everything. The 2.7L engine is new. The entire Raptor package is new (at least to Rangers), with its rugged off-road features, standard 4WD, Fox coil-over shocks, locking front and rear differential, increased ground clearance, and 33-inch all-terrain tires. For all models, the 2024 Raptor is bigger than its predecessors: 2 inches more for both the wheelbase and frame width. And the bed (measuring 43.5 cubic feet) is now wide enough to accommodate a standard sheet of 4’ plywood, laid flat between the wheel wells. The new exterior styling borrows from the F-150, with fender flares and C-shaped headlights and taillights. Ford has upgraded the cabin, with more upscale materials and lots of high-tech, including larger, vertically oriented digital displays. By focusing on just one body type, the 4-door crew cab with a 5-foot bed, Ford has eliminated the extended cab option of previous Rangers.

Real World Performance

The expanded wheelbase and track width make for more stability, with the 2024 Ranger handling curves more nimbly than its predecessors. In combination with rear shocks that have been repositioned outboard of the frame, the chunkier stance also means a more comfortable ride. An available electronic rear differential further enhances handling. Drivers who mourn the loss of manual transmission will appreciate the increased handling feel afforded by all the drive modes. The XL, XLT, and Lariat come with normal, snow, and mud modes. The Raptor comes with Normal, Sport, Slippery, Tow/Haul, Off-Road, Rock Crawl and Baja modes. In addition, 4WD models can be upgraded to a part-time system, allowing effortless shifting between 4WD and 2WD, as the driver addresses changing road conditions.
